  Foreword with Mark Taylor

This month has seen some big steps being taken at the eLan Group in terms of moving on and moving up! Peter Taylor, current COO of the eLan Group, has started a supplies and materials procurement business for Blythedale and other North Coast developments. This is in anticipation of the imminent resolution of the Blythedale land claim and shows our commitment to moving on site soon! Peter will remain closely involved with eLan as a Director and continue overseeing our hospitality interests. We wish him well on his new venture and know that he will be sorely missed among the ranks!

Taking his place as COO of the eLan Group will be Patrick Kleu. Having just returned from an 7 year stint in Switzerland, where he was the MD for Execujet Europe and Group CFO of Execujet worldwide, Patrick brings a wealth of financial, entrepreneurial and operational experience to the table. He is a qualified CA and has previously worked for SAPPI, Airlink and Imperial Bank.

Patrick’s move back to South Africa is testimony to the highly qualified professionals who are returning to South Africa, seeking and finding great opportunities. Patrick, his wife and two children will be settling at Simbithi Eco-Estate.

There have been a number of articles in the media recently regarding the incompetence of the Regional Land Claims Commission – our only stumbling block to the resolution of Blythedale Coastal Resort. Click here if you would like to access these articles. We remain committed to you as our valued investors and will keep you updated once the claim has been resolved!

Warmest regards,

CEO The eLan Group

  Blythedale Coastal Resort making track!

As already mentioned, there have been a number of constructive articles in the media lately which have sparked national awareness of the Blythedale land claim. Although this has only come into the public domain of late, as developers of this landmark project, we remain unconditionally committed to this project. Since inception, the entire development professional team meet every fortnight and each division is well prepared for implementation once transfer of the land takes place.

Since the DFA approval, the design team are meeting fortnightly fine-tuning plans. The feasibilities are re-evaluated on an ongoing basis, in keeping with current costs to ensure market sustainability. We have continued with the detailed survey required for the design development and enhanced the Architectural guidelines, as well as the Architectural elements, such as gatehouses and administration areas. The main service providers namely Umgeni Water, Kwa-Dukuza, Ilembe and Eskom are met with regularly in order to tie in with our planning.

We have also met with the Els design team with regards to the Championship Golf Course and have adapted our infrastructural designs & rollout to complement theirs. We have met the Sharks Board for our beach safety proposals and Ezimvelo Wildlife for our environmental monitoring and maintenance programmes. We have re-designed some dams to suit new DFA approvals and these have been constructed to be environmentally compatible and workable.

Blythedale Coastal Resort – Sites Available

The farm is currently being prepared for the allocation of sites. This involved large-scale tree felling (of current plantations) in order to open up views and make sites available. In all of this activity, no indigenous vegetation is being interfered with and the rehabilitation of certain areas of coastal forest is being carried out.

Situated 100m from the  breaking waves, and safely above the primary dune, these  first, second and third row sites have magnificent panoramic 180° sea views. Starting at R2 020 000

North facing forest sites, looking into dense indigenous coastal forest, these sites start at R1 520 000.

  Simbithi Build-By Date Removed!

The developers felt that forcing people to build within a three year period was counterproductive. Simbithi caters for a wide rage of residents from young families to planning retirees who need to prepare financially for the building of their homes. The decision was taken because the sites are so controlled, and through this tight building process control, the impact is non existent to neighbouring residents when construction does take place. Furthermore, building is not permitted on weekends. This has certainly opened up new markets!

In a competition run internally, this is what the staff at the eLan Group are doing as their bit to save the planet…

"I placed a brick in the toilet cistern to raise the water level so less water is required when flushing."
"All electric appliances are unplugged as even on standby mode they use electricity!"
"Our house is north facing to take advantage of natural lighting, heating and cooling."
"I buy products with less packaging and choose cardboard (which biodegrade) over plastic."
"I share transport where possible as this saves fuel, wear and tear on my vehicle and reduces the amount of CO₂ emissions."
"I avoid printing in colour and print back to back to reduce paper consumption (this is of course only when I need to print in the first place)."
"All my light bulbs have been changed to energy efficient globes."
"I have repaired all leaking taps at home."
"We only put lights on at night in the room we are using."
"We have a worm farm which feeds on our kitchen waste. This excellent form of liquid compost that is created is then used in our organic veggie garden."
"We have installed a grey water system and rain water harvesting tank. In some instances our water will be recycled three times and our garden will always be green thanks to the filtered water that is left behind!"
"We have planted an indigenous garden. The benefits are low maintenance costs, little watering required during winter and the plus is it attracts lots of birds, frogs, bats, butterflies and reptiles."
"I have installed a water filter at home instead of purchasing bottled water."
"We staple any waste scrap paper into scribble pads."
"We have replaced all chemical cleaners with non toxic products and organic alternatives."
"I have changed all my batteries to rechargeable ones. Batteries are not biodegradable and full of toxic heavy metals that could leak into land fills."
"I save water by taking shorter showers and have installed a low flow showerhead."
"We have planted indigenous shade trees around the house not only to attract bird life, but provide that much needed shade in summer."
"I have installed a geyser timer to limit the time my geyser is on when I am not at home."
"We have brought up our child with a deep love and respect for nature and the environment. From the age of 1 month, she would quietly lie on her blanket under our mango tree watching the sun filter through the leaves - she was happiest when outside, with the sun on her belly and the grass under her feet, chuckling as our dogs sniffed this perfect little person."
