| Foreword With Mark Taylor |
 |
 |
The 2009 elections have come and gone and it was encouraging to see the high volume of South Africans who took the time to cast their votes and the peaceful and fair nature of the voting process. The rand demonstrated great resilience by strengthening throughout the election period and despite this weeks announcement of a recession within South Africa, we are still very bullish about the current state of our economy and about the numerous opportunities that exist. |
One only has to take a look at the business and infrastructural growth occurring at present to be reminded of all the positive developments occurring within our special country.
Yesterday's additional interest rate cut bodes very well for the local property market as we build momentum towards the 2010 World Cup and beyond! This is certainly illustrated by resurgent investor confidence which has resulted in an increased number of visitors to both Simbithi Eco Estate and Blythedale Coastal Resort.
The months of April and May have been very busy ones for the eLan Group as we enjoyed a very successful launch of The Worx Zone within Umhlanga Ridge Town Centre, a move towards breaking ground at Blythedale Coastal Resort and have made exciting progress at Ruitersvlei Wine Estate.
Within weeks, thousands of British Lions Rugby Supporters will be arriving on our shores for a ten match tour that will grip the nation. We are busy gearing up for a number of high profile marketing initiatives around this tour which will focus on exposing overseas tourists to our diverse offering of residential, commercial and hospitality opportunities.
We have just returned from the Cannes Film Festival and the Monaco Grand Prix, where we had the opportunity to strengthen the brands of South Africa and Kwazulu Natal through interactions with a very affluent market. We were delighted to have had four of our brand ambassadors in John Smit, Lucas Radebe, Gary Bailey and Gary Mabbut on the trip with us and the networking opportunities were invaluable.
The general awareness of South Africa was very encouraging and as was the appetite for investment within South Africa, so we look forward to strengthening such ties to help expand our international investor base and to develop the eLan brand abroad.

| Worx Zone Sales Off To A Flying Start |
 |
Worx Zone sales flew off the starting block at the launch in Durban on the 7th of May and to date, 48% of the development has been sold to the value of R47million.
The launch had over 200 people in attendance and amongst the buyers were Sharks players Odwa Ndungane, Tendai 'Beast' Mtawarira and John Smit. Smit said, "This is a very well priced opportunity for people to get into commercial property and access to the business centre makes it perfect for any small business owner or entrepreneur."
The buzz at the launch was most encouraging and it is evident that the Worx Zone appeals to prospective buyers based on numerous factors such as affordability, access to the business centre, the prime Umhlanga location and the networking opportunities available with other businesses located in the block. The offering is also enhanced by the proposed loyalty programme with Worx Zones in other cities and a highly credible development and marketing team.
The Worx Zone is conveniently located on the Umhlanga Ridge Town Centre close to the N2, Gateway Theatre of Shopping and only 8km from the new King Shaka International Airport.

The King Shaka International Airport is ahead of schedule and will be ready to welcome a host of international tourists directly to the province of Kwazulu Natal by early 2010.
Both Blythedale Coastal Resort and Simbithi Eco Estate are perfectly positioned to capitalise on the residential, commercial and industrial growth that the airport will stimulate and this development will continue to entrench the Kwazulu Natal North Coast as South Africa's new "hotspot!"

| Legends Challenge 2009 |
 |

 |
The annual Legends Challenge was held recently in a multi-disciplinary competition pitting the eLan Group, South African Rugby Legends Association (SARLA), Jeep Apparel and the Mercury against each other in a titan clash for the top position.
Amongst the eLan challengers were Olympic medallist Ryk Neethling and Carte Blanche presenter Derek Watts. Making an appearance in some of the other teams were top Jeep rider Craig Paul, surf ski champion Barry Lewin and water sports star Jenna Venter. Gary Teichmann and Wayne Fyvie were also spotted in the field.
The action packed itinerary included a mountain bike and navigational race at Blythedale Coastal Resort, golf at Simbithi Eco-Estate, offshore fishing and a water adventure race at uShaka Marine World and finally a cook-off at the Riverside Hotel.
Team Jeep dominated the action for the first couple of days but their hold on the number one spot slipped slightly when eLan took first place in the fishing and golf.
Three successful days of adventure came to a close on the 10th May at the Riverside Hotel. Team Jeep emerged victorious followed closely by the eLan Group by one point. SARLA took third position with the Mercury rounding off the table.

Pictures from Top to bottom: Mark Taylor of eLan showed off his cooking skills on Day 3, Carte Blanche presenter Derek Watts and eLan marketing manager Stefan Botha were part of the victorious Golf Team on Day 2, Olympic medallist Ryk Neethling proved his talents go beyond dominating the swimming pool to include surfing as well, The eLan MTB team with rival team capt. John Allan of SARLA. |

As winter fast approaches, the destructive fires that affected our country in 2008 and 2009 should be a reminder to us of its devastating effect. eLan staff are currently ensuring that adequate fire protection for all infrastructure is in place and all fire tracers have been completed at Avenol and New Forest.
At Ruitersvlei the signs of the recent fires are still evident as the landscape is still black but with the pending rains, the views from the Estate will be transformed .Kobus Mostert, the viticulturist, and his great team ensured that the fire damage on Ruitersvlei was minimized by working throughout the night so well done to them! |
Nick Tredger, previous manager of New Forest, has been transferred to Somkhanda to assist the Gumbi community in managing the game reserve and upgrading current lodges. Nick has vast experience in wildlife management and will add massive value to the project.
Somkhanda is an amazing reserve and we are currently dealing with a number of key conservation initiatives, namely an audit of current water distribution for game, the monitoring of the 11 black rhino found within the reserve and the start of an important leopard research project to determine leopard densities.
A number of meetings with eco friendly suppliers continue and we are now in possession of a comprehensive data base of eco friendly suppliers, ranging from eco paints, to alternative power, to the use of worms to eliminate waste.
The fly-fishing at Avenol has been very productive with three fly-fishermen catching and releasing some 27 fish recently, with some of the fish weighing around 2 kilograms.
Anyone interested in learning to fly fish at Avenol should, please contact petercoulon@elan.co.za to join an ESA/eLan fly-fishing clinic.
Regards

It's that time again, time to enlighten you as to what the latest buzz is in and around Ruitersvlei . For one, the winter is here and it started off with a bang. Before we knew it we had to change from our summer shorts to full on winter wear. Wow how time flies while having fun.
The first of our 2009 white wines, Chenin Blanc, has been bottled labelled and is ready for sale and it is with great excitement that we release this wine. The red wines are all done with mallolactic fermentation and are holding up very nicely. There are some really good reds awaiting in the cellar which require much needed rest and maturation in barrels. It will only be released from next year on. All in good time.
From the vineyard, under the watchful eye of our viticulturist Kobus Mostert, we are in the process of removing certain vines allocated for renewal and doing the necessary soil preparations and nutrient additions to ensure optimum growth for the vineyards having to replace them.
From a very chilly and wet Ruitersvlei, do whatever you can to stay warm this winter, hopefully, the way we like to do it, with a fire place, a loved one and a glass of red wine!!!

| From Rhodesia to Mugabes Zimbabwe: Chronicles of a Game Ranger by Nick Tredger |
 |
 |
Nick Tredger currently works as eLan's consultant on the development and management of Somkhanda Lodge and Residential Estate. But there is more than meets the eye to this game ranger turned consultant turned author. In 1978, after an 18 month national service stint in the Rhodesian Army, he joined the Department of National Parks and Wildlife as a cadet-ranger. His first station was the remote Chizarira National Park, where amongst the isolated rugged mountains and gorges, he and a handful of brave young rangers working in siege conditions, fought both for their country and for the preservation of the wilderness around them.
The book follows his early introduction to this life depicting the personalities that he encountered, anti-poaching patrols, living with and within the civil war, animal and wildlife anecdotes, personal growth and the development of maturity and dedication, and passages that describe the beauty and sometimes-ludicrous nature of our wonderful continent.
This will undoubtedly be a moving read. To order your copy, please visit www.galago.co.za, call 011-907-2029 or mail lemur@mweb.co.za. For those outside South Africa, please order via the website.
