Foreword With Mark Taylor |
Last week saw the official launch of our new sales office in Ballito, conveniently situated in the heart of it all, the Lifestyle Centre. Supported by the KwaDukuza Mayor, two of the municipal managers, celebrities, sporting hero’s, media representatives and property investors, we are upbeat about this bold new move which sees eLan firmly entrenched as developers leading the property game on the North Coast.
This month sees me attending MIPIM in France, once more, exhibiting the eLan Property Group together with a large South African contingent with possibly the best exhibit we have had to date! Coordinated by Old Mutual Properties, eLan together with a number of other property role players are once more pioneering the South African property arena and offering all that our fantastic country has to share, with the rest of the world.
Nearing half way through the first quarter of 2010, we have successfully generated around 20 000 leads and concluded 37 deals spilling over from the festive season – 23 at Simbithi and 14 at Blythedale totalling around R38m. This achievement proves that effective awareness backed up by a good product, there are still hungry investors out there and the indications are clear that the market is starting to force an upward trend once again!
On this end note, the D-Day for funding for Blythedale Coastal Resort (from our European Investor) is drawing closer!!!

| The Worx Zone is re-launching its product to offer part commercial, part hotel room investment. The synergy of combining these two products bodes well for the location within the new Gateway precinct, a live-work-play mixed use area which is a buzz of activity. Calculated yields will guarantee a rental for investment buyers with the added advantage of this model being rolled out to other centres within South Africa, offering exchangeability for the travelling businessman. |

| With an eLan presence in the UK for 5 years now, we have recently moved offices to the Beehive, the original terminal at London Gatwick Airport. This fantastic listed Art Deco building was the first circular airport terminal in the world with the interior being superbly renovated to reflect the period. |
|
 |
There is a compelling argument for South Africa as an investment area going forward, primarily since it is an aggressive emerging market. There is no doubt that Africa is open for business! South Africa, having ducked most of the bullets of the recent global banking crisis through good governance, will provide fantastic commercial and residential investment opportunities over the next decade and eLan will continue to be a major and innovative provider of such opportunities to the markets in the UK and Europe.” |

IN LOVE WITH BLYTHEDALE IN A MOUNTAIN BIKE CHALLENGE |
|
The inaugural Blythedale Coastal Resort Mountain Bike Challenge which took place on Valentine’s Day was a resounding success. More than 430 riders took part and were challenged to a diverse terrain which saw them riding through dense coastal forest, cane fields and a section of beach. Some of KwaZulu-Natal’s top riders were present as well as a team from the South African Rugby Legends Association. Riders could choose between the 40km and 19km route and there was a 6km fun race for children and the less energetic adults.
The course started at the Cane and Spoke mountain bike trail centre and wound its way through most of Blythedale Coastal Resort. The two routes encompassed the resort’s 320-hectare indigenous forest, 3km stretch of beach and spectacular views.
This will become an annual event on the Mountain Bike Calendar.

DEDICATED TO PROTECTING OUR LAND / Rangers Arrive At Blythedale Coastal Resort |
| |
| |
Peter Coulon, Land and Conservation Manager for the eLan Group has begun developing and managing the conservation initiatives of Blythedale Coastal Resort, especially prior to development.
Field Rangers have been employed to protect the natural areas of the Resort and this will be achieved by monitoring access into the forests and conducting foot patrols in order to uncover snares and the unauthorised removal of fauna.
Since the field rangers have been deployed, illegal netting in the estuary has been curbed with litter patrols along the coastline establishing the removal of litter and discarded fishing line which is fatal for bird entanglement.
|
|
| |
| |
 |
On BCR recently, a number of sightings of Blue Duiker and Bushbuck have been observed with all sightings of forest dwelling antelope recorded. The sighting of Blue Duiker is especially exciting as it a red data species. It is hoped that through the protection and management of the forest, Blue Duiker populations will increase which in turn will assist in the conservation of this species. |

SOUTH AFRICA - BEST HOUSING MARKET OVER LONG TERM |
|
|
South Africa is the best performing housing market in the world over the longer term, latest figures from British news magazine The Economist reveal.
The magazine’s global house price index shows that SA house prices rose by a cumulative 418% over the past 12 years (1997 to 2009). That far outstrips any of the other 20 housing markets tracked by the index. The next best performers were Australia, Britain and Spain with growth of 181%, 175% and 167% respectively over the same time.
It appears that SA is also one of only a few countries in the world where house prices are back to their 2008-peaks. The Economist notes that although house prices have already started to rise in seven out of the 20 countries tracked by its housing index, most of these markets are still below their 2008-peaks.
The picture looks decidedly rosier for the SA housing market!

The South African Rugby Legends Association entered a team, amongst others, of former rugby players Craig Jamieson, John Allan and John Slade to participate in the Blythedale MTB race on the 14th February, to create awareness for the Legends Celebrate Life Fund. The Legends Celebrate Life Fund is a charitable trust to raise funds for the South African Rugby Legends Medical Fund. The fund was founded by SARLA & former Springbok flank Rob Louw, who had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of melanoma cancer and remarkably survived round one of his battle against the disease.
The picturesque Blythedale Coastal Resort created a wonderful background to the race and certainly stood the cyclist in good stead for their training for both the Sani2C and the Cape Argus.
Events have been organised to raise funds and create awareness of the Legends Celebrate Life Trust, and to find out how you can pledge a donation or join us at these events, please visit

Janelle Maritz has been involved in property on the North Coast for the past 8 years where she has seen the shift in the market from holiday (second) homes to people relocating into primary residences. She believes that the impact of the airport will bring an increase in commercial development and open up a whole flow of Johannesburg commuters in search of coastal lifestyles.
“I am proud to be associated with the eLan Group as it is a young dynamic group of professionals and I also enjoy the charitable work and work with Rugby Legends they are involved in.”

Angela Clack, a conveyancer from Knysna has worked with developers for ten years and loved being part of the town’s new development projects. She recently moved to the North Coast and has fallen in love with the lifestyle Simbithi has to offer.
“Simbithi Eco-Estate has blown me away. Its natural beauty is obvious and the sensitivity with which the residents have built their homes is admirable. Moreover the sense of “family living” infuses Simbithi with a warmth and sense of peace that is unequalled in any other area.”
