Situated in the picturesque Dargle Valley in the heart of the Natal Midlands, Avenol is a stately country retreat for the fly fishing enthusiast, looking for a country lifestyle, within a secure and serene environment. The gently rolling hills of Avenol boast a fascinating selection of wild flowers and indigenous vegetation, and is one of the most water-rich areas in the country, with springs, mountain streams and waterfalls in abundance.
Situated west of Dargle, 20 minutes from the N3 National Highway, one hour from Durban and four hours from Johannesburg, the Estate is located at the southern most region of the New Forest Reserve. The vision is that this development will become an exclusive fly fishing destination boasting some of the best trout waters in the country. The Estate is one of the most scenic in the region and includes five breathtaking waterfalls.
Avenol Country and Fly Fishing Estate will consist of natural grasslands, wetlands and natural rivers including the Umgeni River. The sensitive natural resources will undergo a long term rehabilitation process along the same lines of New Forest with the introduction of game. An additional element that will be retained is that of a working cattle farm environment that will include a dairy, as well as pigs, sheep and horses.
The minimum size of the plots are 4000m² with a building footprint of 1000m² to ensure minimum impact. The infrastructure includes country style roads, purification plants and sewage treatment plants, resulting in the water usage being put back into the Estate, as water in this region is the most sensitive resource of all. The architecture of the Estate will reflect surrounding farmhouse designs typical of the Midlands area and will be strictly controlled through design guidelines.
