EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINALS

The European Championship Quarter Finals have been completed and we are now at the serious business end of the tournament.

Iceland the slayers of the mighty England finally went out of the competition, being beaten 5-2 by the hosts France, yet the Icelandic team went out with spirit and along with Wales have been the teams that have gained the most respect.

Wales and Gareth Bale are in the Semi  Finals of a major tournament for the first time in their countries history, after coming from behind to beat the much fancied Belgium team 3-1, with goals from Williams, Robson-Kanu and Vokes.

Portugal and Ronaldo are through to the Semi’s after beating Poland in a penalty shoot out, after a 1-1 draw after extra time.

Germany and Italy had a gargantuan battle, with Bonucci cancelling out Ozil’s opener for Germany to send the game into a penalty shoot out, it was probably one of the worst penalty shoot outs that I have seen in a major tournanament, with many penalties flying high and wide, but Germany finally held their nerve to win 6-5.

The Semi Final line up pitches Portugal against Wales or Ronaldo against Bale, with most of the world supporting the complete underdogs in Wales, it has been an incredible tournament for them and they have gained many plaudits for their performances, they are a very good hard working team, with the extra qualites of Bale, Ramsey and Allen having given them the edge. However Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey, who was in fine form against Belgium and Tottenham’s Ben Davies both received second yellow cards and will now miss the game against Portugal.

The other Semi Final, sees two of the pre tournament favourites France and Germany, pitched up against each other, this is a game that is very hard to call, the hosts have the home nation supporting them, whilst Germany are growing in stature with each game.

My predictions for the Semi Finals ;-

Wales v Portugal    –    Portugal (although I really hope Wales can pull off another major surprise)

France v Germany    –    Germany (although I really hope France go through, I know Hugo Lloris the France Captain and Spurs
keeper well, so would love to see him playing in the final)

These are two predictions that I hope I get wrong.

Have a good week

Gary
